3.11 Unclosed Rembrandt light can create unflattering partial shadows near the mouth. Raise the light and put it at more of a side angle to fix this problem.

WHICH MOOD, WHICH LIGHT?

After exploring several ways in which the face can be lit, the next question may be, Which is the best? The easy answer is to say Rembrandt (because he’s totes the best), but the more complicated answer is that the right lighting pattern is the one you want. If the desired goal is to achieve maximum drama, a pattern that presents lots of shadows is best. Short light introduces more shadows (which would seem to make it the default choice here), but that is not necessarily true. The placement of the light builds with the decision of how dark the shadows are (or are not) meant to be. This is the moment in which the techniques of lighting ratios would be applied. All of these elements are figured out, decided upon, balanced, and added up to help you achieve the mood, create the effect on the face, and direct the eye where you want the viewer to look.
